What the data says

Winners here arrive with course history — it is the strongest course-history signal in the entire model library (about 45% of the winner profile). They also overpower the short track off the tee — and then scramble and putt the lights out on TifEagle Bermuda greens.

What the players are saying

Course intel straight from the players — via ASAP Sports interview transcripts.

“I grew up in the South on bermudagrass, I love bermuda greens. It’s not a long golf course. It’s a golf course where I get a lot of short clubs and you can’t really overpower the golf course.”

— Brian Gay 2020 champion, on Port Royal’s bermuda greens and short layout

“I love playing when it’s really hard. It just eliminates the guys who maybe aren’t as good at hitting shots that don’t get affected by wind or rain as much.”

— Lucas Herbert 2021 champion, on Port Royal’s brutal wind

“On some spots on the course it was really blowing, but the greens were much better than I thought. I thought it was going to be very difficult to putt with the strength of the winds.”

— Seamus Power 2022 champion, on putting at Port Royal in the wind

Turning Back The Page

The 2025 Butterfield Bermuda Championship — a trip down memory lane.

01Pre-Tournament

The books liked Rico Hoey (+1600), Kevin Yu (+1900), Thorbjorn Olesen (+2200). The tipsters liked someone else entirely — the Golf Tips Checker consensus (282 tips, 50+ sources) ranked Justin Lower most-tipped, then Adam Svensson and Seamus Power. And the chatter around the eventual winner? There wasn't any. Adam Schenk was +12000. Nobody had him.

Ranked 246th in the world and 134th in the FedEx Cup, he'd missed 15 cuts on the season. As @Golfbet put it once the trophy was lifted: “Betting golf is hard.”

Chart: @GolfTipsChecker — 282 tips from 50+ sources. Justin Lower the most-tipped player.

02In-Tournament

The one-handed putter. Schenk picked up the tip from CBS analyst Mike Hulbert at the 3M Open in July. Mid-tournament at Port Royal, after missing “another five-footer, right to left,” he made the switch — and rehearsed it the night before on the carpet of his room at the Hamilton Princess.

The wind. Sustained 25 mph, gusts to 40 and beyond. Thursday's opening round was suspended for darkness. On Sunday, Schenk hit quarter-swing driver stingers all day — on the par-4 12th, 131 yards out, he needed a 5-iron and still came up short.

03Conclusion

Schenk shot an even-par 71 on Sunday to finish −12, one clear of Chandler Phillips. On the 18th, his approach sailed over the green — he putted through six feet of fringe, watched the wind push it five feet short, and holed the par putt to win. Takumi Kanaya's four-foot par putt lipped out on 18, costing him a FedEx Cup jump from 120th to 83rd. And 54-hole co-leader Braden Thornberry shot 80 and vanished.

04Post-Round

“I've putt for PGA Tour wins so many times in my barn. To see one go in is something I'll never forget.”

Adam Schenk — his family owns a sod farm in Indiana

“When we finished, me, Max [McGreevy] and Adam were walking back and we all agreed that this was probably the hardest round of golf I've ever played in my life.”

Chandler Phillips

“I can't believe it's over. It seemed like the longest day ever.”
